Ḥaḍrat Mawlānā Qāḍī Ẓuhūr-ul-Ḥasan relates from an eye-witness that, during a meal with Shaykh-ul-Islam Mawlānā Ḥusain Aḥmad Madanī, a man wearing tattered clothes seemed a little uneasy and awe-struck by the other respected and well-dressed people present.
As a result, he did not participate and sat behind the group of people eating. When Ḥaḍrat Madanī’s gaze fell on him, he instructed him to participate in the meal with the others. When he joined, he happened to sit next to someone who was highly esteemed and wearing expensive clothes; making him feel offended and resentful.
When the newcomer sensed this resentment, he began eating with a little apprehension and discomfort.
When Ḥaḍrat Madanī saw this, he ordered him to stand; however, he hesitated in obliging to his command. So, Ḥaḍrat Madanī ordered him again. When he stood, Ḥaḍrat Madanī made space for him to sit right beside him. He then instructed him to eat with ease and comfort.
Thereafter, Ḥaḍrat Madanī addressed the gathering saying, “Only Allah knows what status and lofty position these penniless and poverty-stricken individuals hold in His eyes.
The high esteemed guest realising his mistake, begged the man for forgiveness.
