I Obtained Benefit from the Heat

Shaykh-ul-Ḥadīth Haḍrat Mawlānā Muḥammad Zakariyyā Kandelwhī says that, during my father’s time the madrasah (Islamic seminary) did not yet have a kitchen to supply students, nor was there a cook or restaurant in the vicinity of the madrasah. Because my father’s family was not residing there, his food was arranged with a cook who had a restaurant. From the time the food arrived till the time that he ate it, the food would turn cold, especially during the cold days of winter. For this reason, he would place the pot of food just near the madrasah’s fireplace which would heat the water, but not inside it, so the food would remain warm by its warmth. Then he used to contribute two or three rupees monthly towards the madrasah’s funds, saying that he had obtained benefit from the fire of the madrasah. Despite this, he never took any salary from the madrasah for teaching.
