Muftī Muḥammad Taqī ʿUthmānī narrates an incident which occurred when his elder sister had pain in her teeth due to which many of her teeth had to be removed. She experienced severe pain in this process. Once, after having some teeth removed she came in the presence of her father (Muftī Muḥammad Shafīʿ). He enquired of her health and wellbeing, upon which she complained, “Father, these teeth are very strange. When they first appear they cause pain and when they begin to fall out they cause pain!”
Hearing this, my respected father, sternly rebuked, “O my daughter, is this the only thing you remember with regards to your teeth that they caused pain when appearing and when falling out? On the other hand, you forget all those years in between this, wherein you benefitted greatly from this god-given bounty!”
In this manner, my respected father would educate his associates and cultivate in them the consciousness of keeping the bounties and blessings of Allah at the forefront of one’s mind and expressing gratitude upon them. As a result, my sister immediately pleaded for forgiveness. She herself says that after this incident, never again did I utter any word of ingratitude again.
